I biplani di d'Annunzio by Luca Masali6/25/2023 ![]() After the economic boom, with the escalation of the Cold War and the Years of Lead, the “victory” of existentialism over idealism, Italian literature found a new way to express the issues related to the "uncanny" through the “purely fantastic,” but with few concessions to Sci-Fi. The only Science Fiction "allowed" was the foreign one, which was, however, still considered a minor genre. The progressive politicization of the literary salons and the new cultural elite decreed the ultimate death of Fantascienza. After the war country's reconstruction Italy became an industrial power and the literature began to recount the horrors of war and the partisan resistance, choosing, as did cinema, a (neo)realist approach. Italy, until the end of World War II, was a rural country, literature was produced almost exclusively within the cultured ruling class and was almost always oriented towards introspective fiction or realism. This gap between definitions pigeonholed this literary genre with the status of children's or pulp fiction. ![]() by Jadel Andreetto Science Fiction is translated with the word “Fantascienza” a fusion of science and fantasy. ![]() THE ITALIAN (Milky)WAY TO SCIENCE FICTION Abstract of the paper read at the 2013 Global Science Fiction" symposium at Wellesley College", Boston, USA. ![]()

Captive by Felicia Fox6/25/2023 ![]() In the following years, his wife TINA visits the police station where she has formed a relationship with the detective, NICOLE. MATTHEW is driving his massive logging truck and leaves his precious daughter sleeping as he ducks into roadside washroom. Otherwise, this sounds like a very interesting project from the director of THE SWEET HEREAFTER, FELICIA’S JOURNEY, and WHERE THE TRUTH LIES. THE CAPTIVE now has a very extensive plot breakdown that shows exactly how it sets itself apart from PRISONERS.īe warned, this breakdown contains massive spoilers for the movie, so tread lightly. Of course, Ryan Reynolds is no Hugh Jackman, but the guy is still an untapped talent in my opinion. That is not to say that it is a carbon copy, but they both deal with parents seeking vengeance on those who have hurt their children. THE CAPTIVE, previously titled QUEEN OF THE NIGHT, is likely heading to the festival circuit next year and sounds a lot like what we saw just recently from the acclaimed Hugh Jackman/ Terrence Howard thriller PRISONERS. ![]()

![]() ![]() It was titled “Insider Baseball,” and it has since been, like so many of Didion’s essays, so widely imitated that its innovations can be easy to overlook. She documented the moment in an essay for The New York Review of Books. She watched as presidential fitness was redefined as athletic prowess with the consent of the national media-as the myths that shape, and limit, Americans’ sense of political possibility were manufactured in real time. Didion watched as a baseball was procured, a staffer tossed the ball to the candidate, he tossed it back-and as the cameras dutifully captured the exchange. ![]() ![]() The assembled journalists were trailing the Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis. Witchlight by Jessi Zabarsky6/24/2023 ![]() They literally illustrate the text to help fill any holes the mostly sparse text might have. However, you do not feel too disconnected for too long. This might be why, while these are lovely books, the American reader might be somewhat separated from the story. Each contributor has a European background or at least has an old-school European feel to the writing style. It was not until I read more about each author and illustrator that I realized what it was. Like the others in the Random House Graphic novel series, I noticed each graphic novel had an odd tone to it. ![]() I neither OMG LOVED or OMG HATED this book. ![]() The ending is obvious, but this was a comfortable book. ![]() Sometimes, the “female empowerment” can be a bit heavy-handed, but this spiritual, modern-toned, concept harbors flashes of the earthly past of women and their powers. When Lelek and Sanja develop a deep bond, a love for each other, they find the family they are looking for. ![]() Lelek is a witch and Sanja a village girl who is not appreciated by her family. The main characters are a witch, her friend and the struggles they endure while trying to find peace from their past. A strong 12 & up (but more likely 13 to 15, and of course, adult) reader would find something here to relate to and/or enjoy. Witchlight is a contemporary graphic novel that deals with women’s issues of gender and what is their place in the world. ![]()

Here comes everybody by clay shirky6/23/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() "Public Goods," by Tyler Cowen in the Concise Encyclopedia of Economics. Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing Without Organizations. My 15 year old son has never taken a bus ride alone! When I was 10 I used buses to travel al over time.īTW I can work while listening to EconTalk.Ībout ideas and people mentioned in this podcast: Books: The change in amount of freedom that children today have compared to when I was a child amazes me. I also like that discussion of your bus ride. In our area home schoolers have taken over the 4h club. and then they start home schooling and they end up finishing school work in 4 hours a day and teach kids arithmetic at stores Also home schoolers do collaborate all the time one parent will teach math to another patents children in return for teaching art etc. So you got these people start out complaining among other things about modern education methods, a lack of rigor in schools, demanding more home work etc. My wife home schooled our boys for a while and I am amazed at how progressive home schoolers are and considering that many home schoolers started as reactionaries it is even more amazing. I especially liked the discussion of home schooling. ![]() |
